Press Release - Voluntary Watering Restrictions

posted Jul 15, 2012, 7:25 PM by Oak Meadow Administration

The City has issued the attached press release asking for voluntary sprinkling restrictions.  Due to the dry weather, lawn sprinkling has been much greater than average.  In order to ensure that there is an ample supply of water reserved for fire protection and domestic use, the Fitchburg Utility is asking our residents to please not sprinkle their lawns until this dry period ends.

If it is necessary for our residents to sprinkle their lawns, we are asking  that they do so before 9:00 a.m. or after 9:00 p.m., and as indicated below:

- If they live on the odd numbered side of the street, sprinkle their lawn only on odd numbered days.

- If they live on the even numbered side of the street, sprinkle their lawn only on even numbered days.

Sprinkling during the cooler morning or evening hours, as indicated above, is more effective because less water is lost to evaporation and lawns and gardens are able to absorb more of the water.

We do not advise placement of new lawns during this dry period.  We do recommend watering newer trees (including street trees between the curb and sidewalk) and plants that are susceptible to damage from this dry period.

If the water usage continues to increase, the Fitchburg Utility may enact mandatory restrictions.

Please let me know if you have any questions.
