Why does the City leave fallen trees in the wooded parks? With approximately 12 wooded areas, of varying sizes, in the Fitchburg park system prioritization of maintenance activities is needed. As the City prioritizes these management areas user safety is the number 1 goal. Typically these wood lots will have trail systems thru them or on their periphery that residents will use. Dead trees or dead limbs next to our hanging over these trails are priority 1 for removal. Removals of dead limbs and or trees outside of these areas have a lower priority and will be worked on periodically as resources allow. However, there are many benefits to leaving wood on the ground (known as coarse woody debris, CWD). CWD is important for a healthy forest because it returns nutrients to the system and provides for habitat and food for birds and animals. In addition, using the heavy equipment needed to remove the CWD has detrimental effects to the forest such as soil compaction and destruction of the understory and ground layer plants. So, by leaving CWD on the forest floor we save time and money, we reduce the negative impact on the forest environment, we preserve and recycle nutrients, and provide food and shelter for insects, birds and animals. The City Parks Division has partnered up with neighborhood groups and volunteers to work on items not considered as #1 priorities in that neighborhoods wood lot. These items include invasive removal - and general clean up of dead limbs and debris. If this is something of interest a homeowner and a volunteer group be sure to let Scott Endl, Director of Parks, Recreation & Forestry of the City of Fitchburg know. His phone is 608-270-4288.  November 2, 2012 General
